Comic Book Artist Creates the Most Breathtaking Final Fantasy-Like RPG

Giannis Milonogiannis is a comic book artist known for his work on DC comics, such as the Batman series Future State: Gotham. But now he’s shifted his work to a new type of project: developing a Final Fantasy-style RPG inspired by the original PlayStation. While working on this project, he documented every step of the process and shared it on social media. It is a pleasure to follow online.

We’ve got retro-inspired RPGs and more in Cool WIP, Polygon’s roundup of eye-catching clips and work-in-progress screenshots. In this column, the Polygon staff scours the internet for the most exciting games still in the works to give you a sampling of the most exciting projects to come.

This week we have the most ridiculous parkour physics you’ve ever seen, a colorful dragon game, a beautiful dinosaur bird, and an update on the world’s most dastardly criminal squirrel.

A comic artist creates an RPG, sharing his process with the world

Giannis Milonogiannis is a comic artist who uses Twitter to document the creative process Eco Breaker, a turn-based combat RPG. In this tweet, he shares his approach to creating assets for gaming. He scaled the models from top to bottom to achieve a crisp pixel look in the style of the original PlayStation games. He told Polygon that after working in comics, what excites him the most about this particular project is “seeing how the player can define and be part of the story.” Whether it’s the music, character design, or early battle development, it’s been a treat to follow his journey so far. You can read more about the project on its website or Twitter.

On Monday this squirrel commits an armed robbery

We’ve already covered Dan DeEntremont’s work, but I couldn’t resist sharing another work in progress. DeEntremont is currently working on a game, aptly titled Squirrel with a gun, where you can terrorize the city like a squirrel with a gun. And as long as it’s not Untitled Game of Goose, he takes seriously the concept of terrorizing unsuspecting citizens by giving the squirrel that goddamn gun. In a recent clip, the squirrel can be seen pointing a unsuspecting person at gunpoint. It’s hilarious watching it unfold and has already become a fan favorite online.

Birds are technically dinosaurs. Now look at this bird (dinosaur)

Sarah is a software engineer and artist, and her creature designs are some of the best the internet has to offer. Detailed and magical, she has a special talent for designing eye-catching dinosaurs. In case you didn’t know, birds are technically the descendants of dinosaurs, so that’s probably what the “that’s my bird” caption refers to. Anyway, check out this feathered guy because I immediately fell in love with his design.

Gravity who? Check out these ridiculous parkour physics

According to the developers, Enerra is a “third person hack & slash game, set in the future Japan”. We don’t know much about the game beyond that, but the developers posted a clip online showing some of the parkour skills you can use in the game, and it’s absolutely nonsense. Basically, the character is suspended in the air while flipping and spinning multiple times. Sounds pretty silly, but it caught my attention. If you like ridiculous parkour, you can follow the updates about the game on Twitter.

Colorful dragons, damn yeah!

Glyde the Dragon is an action-adventure game developed by Valefor Games. It looks colorful and game-like for Spyro fans looking to relive some of that nostalgia, but in a modern format. A excerpt from the game shows all the powers of the dragon in action. It looks quite elaborate and shows the dragon chaining together electric, fire, and other elemental attacks. Whether Glyde search your alley, you can check more info on its Steam page.
