Detroit Red Wings’ Tyler Bertuzzi refuses COVID-19 vaccine

Tyler Bertuzzi, a key member of the Detroit Red Wings, has refused to be vaccinated against COVID-19, the only Wings player to do so, general manager Steve Yzerman said on Wednesday.

Bertuzzi will still be at training camp, which will last six days starting Thursday at Traverse City. Yzerman said Bertuzzi will not be able to travel to Canada under the current restrictions, which require a 14-day quarantine for unvaccinated players traveling to Canada. The Wings play nine times in Canada, including their first road game on October 23 in Montreal. If Bertuzzi continues to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine, he would lose at least $ 400,000 on the basis of Canada-based games alone.

TRAINING CAMP:The Red Wings’ biggest question: How much of the young core is ready?

“It’s his decision,” Yzerman said Wednesday, on the eve of the camp. “I am not in a position to force anyone. We cannot force anyone to be vaccinated. Personally, I am vaccinated, my family is vaccinated. I will stop there.”

Bertuzzi, 26, signed a two-year, $ 9.5 million contract in July. He is a leading player and a power player, and one of the most daring players on the team.

The NHL and the NHL Players Association do not have a vaccination mandate for players, but unvaccinated players face restrictions that vaccines do not have. Unvaccinated people will not be exempt from a 14-day quarantine when crossing from the United States to Canada, and teams can suspend players who cannot participate in team activities without pay.

“Tyler will follow the protocols for unvaccinated players,” Yzerman said. “The most important thing is to enter Canada now and for the foreseeable future. It will be a problem when we face Canadian teams.

Bertuzzi announced on social media last week that he and his fiancee, Ashley Greasley, were expecting the birth of their first child.
