It’s no secret that Ring of Elden is intentionally designed to be incredibly difficult. While some will have a better time with it than others, it’s not exactly a simple hack-and-slash RPG. Many have criticized the Souls genre for being unnecessarily difficult over the years, asking for an easy mode. Others championed it, believing in the creative vision and satisfaction of overcoming such frustrating obstacles. Nonetheless, the debate over how difficult the genre is is endless and will likely continue for the foreseeable future. That said, the controversy over the difficulty of games like Ring of Elden doesn’t seem to have had much of an impact on the developers.
In a recent interview with the new yorker, Ring of Elden director Hidetaka Miyazaki noted how he wanted to convey the satisfaction of overcoming life’s challenges, but feels sorry for those who cross a line with his difficulty. “I apologize to anyone who thinks there’s too much to overcome in my games – I just want as many players as possible to feel the joy that comes from overcoming hardship,” Miyazaki said. “We all face problems in our daily lives. Finding answers is always a satisfying thing. But in life, you know, there’s not much that gives us those feelings easily.”
Miyazaki also noted that the team has no plans to make their games less difficult, although he believes Ring of Elden is easier than other entries in the series. “We’re always looking to improve, but, in our games in particular, hardship is what gives meaning to the experience, so it’s not something we’re willing to give up at the moment. It’s our identity,” Miyazaki said.
Newly discovered data revealed that barely half of Ring of EldenThe playerbase of defeated the game’s first real boss, so while it might be less grueling than some of the other games in the series, it still causes a lot of it. It’s possible that these numbers are skewed due to the sudden and massive commercial success of the game, but a large number of players are still stuck in the first hours of the game.
