Fugitive creator of Ponzi scheme game brought back to Turkey

The runaway creator of an online Ponzi scheme game was extradited to Turkey on Saturday evening.

Mehmet Aydin, 29, who visited the Turkish consulate in Sao Paulo, was arrested at Istanbul airport as part of an ongoing investigation by Istanbul prosecutors after the arrival of a Turkish Airlines plane at 10:10 p.m.

Aydin, nicknamed “Tosuncuk”, who was also wanted with a Red Notice by Interpol at Turkey’s request, is charged with several crimes, including “establishment of a criminal organization” and “fraud” and faces up to 75%. 260 years in prison.

After medical checks, he was taken to the Istanbul Police Department after procedures at the Istanbul Airport courthouse.

After a four-day interrogation period, he will appear before the Anatolian court in Istanbul.

The Istanbul Attorney General’s Office in Anatolia said that as part of the investigations opened, two separate public cases have been filed against suspects so far, and an investigation is underway regarding the suspects who have not yet been arrested or for which evidence has not been gathered. .

Several lawsuits have been brought against Aydin in the courts of Istanbul and Bursa on charges, including “fraud using information systems, banks or credit institutions”.

The prosecution has drawn up an indictment against 48 suspects, including seven fugitives and 11 under arrest, as part of the investigation against the founders and managers of the Farm Bank.

During the trial before the High Criminal Court of Anatolia, 18 of the 48 defendants were acquitted.

The trial pursues 20 defendants, including four fugitives, including Aydin, his older brother Fatih Aydin, Cengiz Samur and Osman Naim Kaya.

The trial against the defendants will be heard by the 6th High Criminal Court of Anatolia on September 14.

In 2016, Aydin founded the Farm Bank, also known as “Ciftlik Bank” in Turkey, which defrauded 3,762 people. It was inspired by the game on social networks FarmVille;

After complaints from thousands of users, a Red Notice was issued on March 19, 2018, based on an arrest warrant. But he disappeared and had been on the run for two years.

The Turkish Justice Ministry has contacted all countries where Aydin has allegedly been seen, as part of judicial cooperation, including Uruguay, Brazil, Panama, Honduras, Canada and Ukraine.

After being informed that Aydin would have been seen in Brazil, his extradition was requested in Brazil in June 2018. The request was renewed in February.
