COME HERE!

Video game movie adaptations get a bad rap, but most of the time that’s because they’re really bad. That said, there have been a handful that have surprisingly bucked this age-old trend. (I’m looking at you, Silent Hill). Interestingly, however, one seemingly came out of nowhere today that is aiming for streaming dominance.

The film in question is the 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat, which managed to climb the ranks and land ninth place on HBO’s 10 most-watched movies worldwide list, according to FlixPatrol. Pretty commendable for an action movie that’s largely flown under the radar, isn’t it?

Centered on a broken down MMA fighter, Cole Young (portrayed by Lewis Tan from Deadpool 2), who discovers he is destined for greater things through his noble blood and ancestry, with the latest Mortal Kombat reinventing the Cole pits and a ramshackle band of fighters against the evil and demonic monstrosities of the Outworld. And, yes, it sets the stage for a bunch of slow-motion martial arts battles that pit a myriad of recognizable characters from the iconic arcade IP against each other.

Even though critics were baffled by the new Mortal Kombat reboot (it holds an average critical score of 54% on Rotten Tomatoes), it seems the general public, on the other hand, absolutely loved the pic reflected in its impressive score. 86% audience on the same site. Plus, the action-packed reboot actually did pretty well financially, raking in a decent $84.4 million on a budget of $55 million. In fact, a sequel has already been greenlit, which will likely please any die-hard fan.

But what do you say, though? Have you ever had the opportunity to discover the new Mortal Kombat movie? Or will you dodge it like a roundhouse kick in the noggin? Feel free to “finish it” in the usual place below to let us know.
