Season 1 of the deadly survival game series “Squid Game” had only one contestant in mind, with the others killed in a number of ruthless and heartbreaking scenes – or were they?
On the PGA Awards red carpet on Saturday, show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke with Deadline find out if fans could see the return of their favorite actors in the next season. Hwang replied with a laugh, “No, because most of them are dead.”
But he doesn’t completely shut the idea down, saying, “I’m going to try something to bring them back to Season 2.” Pointing to Jung Ho-yeon, who plays Kang Sae-byeok or Player 067 on the show, he adds, “Let’s just say she might have a twin sister, you’ll see.”
Jung laughed at the director’s suggestion, adding to the list of possibilities for his character, “I could change the color of my hair. Let’s do some, like, plastic surgery.
The plot twist wouldn’t be new to K-drama junkies, already accustomed to the genre’s outlandish family secrets, unlikely comebacks and resurrections.
While Hwang says he tinkers with ideas, he hasn’t started writing yet.
“There will be more big games, that’s all I can say,” he said.
“Squid Game”, which became Netflix’s most-watched series after its release in September 2021, won consecutive awards during this year’s awards season.
Although he didn’t originally plan a second season, Hwang announcement it was in the works in November, saying fans left him “no choice”. he later revealed that Season 2 would follow Seong Gi-hun’s quest to resolve the unanswered questions left by the first round of the Games.
“Development [of the season] will be the story of [Lee Jung-jae‘s character] Seong Gi-hun is collapsing,” he said. “The main plot of Season 2 will be the story of the people Gi-hun meets and the people he pursues.”
