The developers of Stellaris “are not done yet” with the game, “there is a lot to do”

While the PC incarnation of Stellaris may not have had specific news to share. PDXCon remixed last weekend, he is celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. Released in 2016 – the same year as Hearts of Iron IV – the great sci-fi strategy game opened up new ground for Paradox by tackling 4X gaming concepts, while also being the studio’s first foray into something. which was not historical.

During Stellaris’ five-year journey so far, the strategy game has undergone major revisions. With patch 2.0 and the Apocalypse expansion, the changes in War, Conquest, and FTL have dramatically changed the pace and foundation of the game. Patch 2.2 has completely reworked the planetary economy and population mechanics, and The changes that accompanied the latest expansion for Nemesis have changed the game so much that the developers have decided to skip a version number and proclaim a new era with patch 3.0.

We caught up with the development team ahead of PDXCon Remixed to get a feel for how they felt about the game on its fifth anniversary. Big, older strategy games like Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV have faced increasing backlash against DLC packs and design decisions in later stages, so we asked the development team if she even wanted to continue for five years. “We have so many different ways to develop ourselves,” Stephen Murray, game designer at Stellaris, told us. “Personally, yes, I would like another five years.”

We also asked them if they would ever revisit past changes, especially as they would learn more and find new ways to solve problems – FTL changes, for example, have partly happened. because they were difficult to balance.

“If it improves the game, then I think we’ll consider it,” Murray told us. “An example is, how many times have we changed the way the empire sprawl works? We’re not done with that yet. I will change it again at some point. Pop growth, I’m not done yet. There has been a lot of very valuable feedback since version 3.0 on this subject.

“If I can continue to come up with interesting ways to bring new moments of wonder to the game, I will be really happy.”
