The next Game of Thrones? Fantasy books on the way to TV and movie screens

Game of thrones filled our lives for almost 10 years. While you wait (and wait) George RR Martin to complete the novels that inspired the hit HBO series, what fantastic bestseller could become your new obsession?

Fortunately, there is no shortage of epic fantasy, sci-fi, and thriller books being adapted into movies and TV shows. From beloved classics like Lord of the Rings and Foundation to contemporary bestsellers like Who Fears Death and Ninth House, here are some of the adaptations that have the potential to reach a level of Game of Thrones fame.


Both the cult 1984 film and the 2000 miniseries have their fans, but in 2021 we’ll get a big-screen version of Frank Herbert’s classic novel. In the distant future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides and his son Paul fight for an invigorating spice with venal Baron Harkonnen in the desert world of Arrakis. After rethinking Blade Runner 2049, acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve takes on another sci-fi classic with the help of a galaxy of stars, including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca ferguson, Oscar isaac, Josh brolin, Zendaya, Jason momoa and Javier bardem. It was postponed twice in 2020 due to the pandemic. Its last release date is October 1.


Isaac Asimov’s flagship series is coming to Apple’s streaming service, Apple TV Plus. Beginning with a series of short stories in 1942, the Foundation books constitute a vast and dense science fiction saga about scientists trying to ward off an impending dark age. The 10-episode series is developed by Josh friedman, the man behind the Terminator television series, and David Goyer, co-writer of the Dark Knight films. It would premiere at the end of 2021.

the Lord of the Rings

Amazon paid a quarter of a billion dollars for the rights to a five-season TV show based on JRR Tolkienthe stories of the Lord of the Rings, because who hasn’t watched Peter Jacksonseries of films and thought: Yeah, it’s okay but it could be longer. The eye-catching Amazon Prime video series is set in the distant history of Middle-earth, years before the events of The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The pandemic did not prevent filming from taking place in New Zealand and the show is expected to air in 2021.

The wheel of time

Amazon Prime Video is also pumping money into Robert Jordan’s long line of fantasy novels. The Wheel of Time takes place in a realm that is both past and future of Earth, where female warriors protect the Reborn Dragon to fight the Dark One. Stars of Rosamund Pike.

Who is afraid of death

Game of Thrones fans will be interested to know that George RR Martin is the executive producer of this HBO show based on Nnedi Okorafor’s 2015 novel. The post-apocalyptic afrofuturist The story follows young Onyesonwu on a quest to find her father – a wizard who raped his mother. It is adapted by Twilight Zone writer Selwn Seyfu Hinds.


The resounding success of Ernest Cline’s novel Player One loan guaranteed that his next book, Armada, was purchased by Universal Pictures even before its publication. The book follows high school student Zack Lightman as he suspects that his favorite online game is a sophisticated simulator that trains him to face a real alien invasion.

Oldest boy

Hugh Howey’s 2011 book Wool is the first in a post-apocalyptic trilogy set in a vast underground silo. It is transformed into a series by Apple TV Plus. Rebecca Ferguson will produce and play the main character Juliette.

Wool is the epitome of a modern multimedia business: it began life in 2011 as an eBook serialized by Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, and is now being adapted by a streaming service. Fans of Howey will be delighted to hear that the author’s other books, Sand, Beacon 23, and Half Way Home, are adapted by Amazon, AMC, and CBS, respectively.

It was adapted by the BBC in 2000, but this time Neil Gaiman and Akiva Goldsman are involved in a new adaptation of Mervyn Peake’s baroque novels. Murder and betrayal ensue as the rightful heir Titus Groan of Gormenghast Castle challenges the scheming Steerpike.

The sand man

Neil Gaiman’s legendary comic book series has been the subject of rumored adaptation for decades. It’s finally happening thanks to Netflix and TV veteran Allan Heinberg – who also co-wrote the movie Wonder Woman – with GoT star Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer.

The Chronicle of Kingkiller

Hamilton Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and worship director Sam raimi would oversee the television and film adaptations of this recent series from author Patrick Rothfuss. Released for the first time in 2007, The Name of the Wind and the sequel The Wise Man’s Fear recount the memories of musician and magician Kvothe. Like Game of Thrones, the latest book, titled The Doors of Stone, has yet to be released.

Consider Phlebas

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos has given personal approval to the news that Amazon’s streaming service is adapting Iain M. Banks’ 1987 novel, the first in the Culture series. These heavy space opera stories take place in a utopian society in which civilizations awkwardly coexist with each other and with artificial intelligence, while spaceships carry names such as’ Prosthetic Conscience ‘and’ No More Mr . Nice Guy ”.

Eleven station

HBO Max is preparing a miniseries based on the 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel, which follows a theater company into a post-pandemic world.

Ninth house

Amazon adapts Bardugo’s Ninth house, the first in an adult series on Yale’s ghostly secret societies.

Dragon house

OK, so maybe nothing can replace Game of thrones. If only Westeros does, HBO has you covered with a plan Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, together centuries before the hit. House of the Dragon is slated for release in 2022.

While waiting for the next big thing to happen, there are adaptations you can already watch, whether they’re halfway there or already said and done.

Its dark materials

Forget the disappointing 2007 film version of The golden compass. This BBC and HBO adaptation is a television show that gives the space and depth necessary for a satisfying interpretation of Philip Pullman’s novels Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Led by some of the producers behind Doctor Who, the story follows young Lyra on an adventure spanning twisted parallel versions of our reality. Logan’s Dafne keen stars like Lyra with James mcavoy and Lin-Manuel Miranda. A third and final season is on the way.

Shadow and bone

Based on the popular Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, the inventor of Netflix Shadow and bone bring a cool twist on fantasy with its steampunk aesthetic from Imperial Russia. This YA series started airing in April.

Brave New World

Aldous Huxley’s scathing dystopian novel of 1932 was adapted in a 2020 series at NBC’s Peacock Streaming Service. It stars young Han Solo, Alden ehrenreich, as a man out of time in a genetically manipulated society. Demi Moore also appears. Back home Creator David Wiener is in charge, joined by bizarre legendary comics Grant Morrison. However, it was not renewed for a second season.

Good omens

David tennant and Michael sheen are perfectly cast as a demon and an angel throwing a key in the works of the apocalypse in Good omens on Amazon. The Amazon Prime Video 2019 miniseries is based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s wickedly funny 1990 novel about the delicious shenanigans that follow when the Antichrist accidentally grows up with the wrong family.
