STRONG POINTS

  • Jadeja picked up 41 wickets in 29 ODIs against West Indies
  • Kapil Dev has 43 wickets against West Indies
  • Jadeja was named vice-captain for the 3-game ODI series, starting July 22

Ravindra Jadeja will be assistant to Shikhar Dhawan when India take on West Indies in a 3-game ODI series in Port of Spain, Trinidad from July 22. Having gained the responsibility of vice-captain, Jadeja will want to step up and lead a young team forward, especially in the bowling department.

Whereas Ravindra Jadeja needs no added motivation while playing for the senior national team, the versatile player is closing in on an ODI bowling milestone.

Jadeja has the opportunity to break Courtney Walsh’s record for most wickets in India-West Indies ODI cricket. He is also in line to break Kapil Dev’s Indian record for most wickets against West Indies in the 50-over format of the match.

Ravindra Jadeja is currently tied for 4th place with Anil Kumble with 41 wickets in 29 matches. However, the left-arm spinner has met with very little success in the Caribbean in the past, winning only 4 wickets in 9 matches in the West Indies.

Jadeja’s success against West Indies came at home, where he won 30 wickets in 18 matches, 3 more than Kumble’s tally.

MOST COUNTERS IN INDIA-ANTILLES ODI

Courtney Walsh – 44 wickets in 38 matches at 24:15
Kapil Dev – 43 wickets in 42 matches at 28.88
Anil Kumble – 41 wickets in 26 games at 23.73
Ravindra Jadeja – 41 wickets in 29 matches at 29.87
Mohammed Shami – 37 wickets in 18 matches at 10:54 p.m.

Jadeja is expected to lead the spin-bowling attack which also includes Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and part-time spin Deepak Hooda. Jadeja has only had one wicket in 5 games in the white-ball series against England but Dhawan is hoping for improvement from him.

However, it remains to be seen if Jadeja is available for action in the ODIs as he is said to have a knee problem. The team management are likely to take a call on Jadeja’s availability after consulting with the medical team on the extent of his injury.
